NAATI Translation Guide
The single most common question we get from Australian visa applicants: do I need a full NAATI translation, or is an extract enough? Choose wrong and you either overpay or get rejected. This guide gives you the answer, case by case.
A word-for-word translation of the entire document — every seal, stamp, signature, footnote, and marginal note. The NAATI translator certifies the whole page as an accurate reproduction of the source.
Use when
A structured extract of the key data fields required by the receiving authority — name, date of birth, ID number, address, event date. The NAATI translator certifies the extracted fields are true to the source.
Use when
| Factor | Full | Extract |

| Turnaround | 2–3 business days | 1–2 business days |
| DOHA (visa) | Accepted | Accepted (civil docs) |
| AHPRA | Required | Rejected |
| Universities / VETASSESS | Required | Not accepted |
| Court / legal use | Required | Not accepted |
Extract for household reg + ID + birth cert. Transcripts and completion certificates must be full.
Extract works for marriage/divorce cert, children's birth cert, ID. Financial evidence and contracts must be full.
Full only — degree, transcript, employment reference, company certificate.
100% full only. Never submit extracts to AHPRA.
Extract is enough for relationship and basic financial evidence.
The extra quoted on request for a full translation is nothing compared to a resubmission delay of 4–8 weeks. If your case officer or assessing authority says 'full', get full. When in doubt, ask us — the pre-check is free.
Send us your document list and destination authority — we'll tell you exactly which files need Full and which can be Extract, with a fixed quote.
