Guide to MFA consular legalisation in Thailand
Legalisation requires an original issued by a government body or already certified, together with an accurate translation. Filing is at Chaeng Watthana or a branch office; standard service takes about three to five business days and express one to two. Once stamped, the file proceeds to the destination embassy as the final step.
Legalisation is the MFA Legalisation Division's authentication of the signature and seal on a Thai document so it can be used abroad — or on a foreign document so it can be used in Thailand.

Step-by-step process
1. Verify the originals, re-issue where needed
Confirm the document was issued by the competent authority and carries the seal and authorised signature. Copies must bear a 'certified true copy' endorsement from the issuer.
2. Translate into the destination language
The translation must reproduce document numbers, dates, seals and footers in full, with the translator's certificate of accuracy attached.
3. Notarial certification by a Notarial Services Attorney
An attorney registered as a Notarial Services Attorney with the Lawyers Council of Thailand certifies the signature, the true copy or the affidavit in the format the destination requires.
4. Legalisation at the Department of Consular Affairs (MFA)
File at the Legalisation Division on Chaeng Watthana Road or a branch office so the MFA can authenticate the seal and signature of the preceding certifier.
5. Embassy or consulate attestation (when required)
Countries outside the Apostille Convention usually require a final attestation at that country's embassy in Thailand.
6. Delivery and record-keeping
Collect the documents together with a scan of every page and keep the acknowledgement slips until the destination confirms receipt.

Common pitfalls
- The MFA authenticates the signature and seal only, not the accuracy of the document's contents.
- A translation error as small as one digit bounces the whole set and forces a fresh filing.
- Every document must spell your name exactly as in your passport. If the spelling differs, attach the name-change certificate or a transliteration note.
- Torn, corrected or copy-of-a-copy originals are commonly rejected at the legalisation stage — request a freshly issued copy from the issuing authority first.
- Some documents carry a validity window (often 3–6 months from issue) set by the receiving authority. Check it before starting the chain.
- The order cannot be swapped: translate → certify → legalise → embassy. Skipping a step means restarting the whole chain.
Practical tips
- Scan every original to a 300 dpi colour PDF before sending it out, in case you must refile or the destination asks for a soft copy.
- Always prepare two sets — one to submit, one to keep. Many authorities retain the submitted originals.
- If the documents will be used in more than one country, say so up front: the number of sets and the attestation format differ by destination.
- Leave at least two weeks' buffer before your real deadline: Thai public holidays and embassy holidays do not coincide.
- Keep every receipt and acknowledgement slip — they are what lets you trace the file or request a replacement if it is lost.
