Complete guide to NAATI certified translation
NAATI translation applies to Thai documents filed in Australia or New Zealand. The translator must hold a current NAATI credential, and the translation must carry the stamp, signature, date and practitioner number on the page. Turnaround is typically one to three business days per set; if MFA legalisation is also needed, allow at least two weeks overall.
A NAATI certified translation is produced by a translator credentialed by Australia's National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters. It is what Australian and New Zealand bodies — the Department of Home Affairs, universities and professional assessors — expect for non-English documents.
Who needs this
- Applicants for any Australian visa stream (partner, student, work, visitor)
- Students applying to Australian and New Zealand institutions
- Professionals lodging skills assessments (nursing, engineering, teaching)
- Citizenship and PR applicants attaching Thai civil-registration records
Document checklist
- 1.Passport bio-data page
- 2.Thai national ID card
- 3.Birth certificate / house registration
- 4.Marriage, divorce or single-status certificate
- 5.Name-change certificate, if any
- 6.Degree certificate and academic transcript
- 7.Employment letter and payslips
- 8.Thai driving licence, for licence conversion
- 9.Police clearance certificate
- 10.Financial documents such as bank statements
Step-by-step process
1. Collect and verify originals
Scan every page in colour and make sure stamps and signatures are legible: a NAATI translation must render every element that appears on the page.
2. Confirm the language pair and direction
NAATI credentials are directional (for example Thai into English only). The translator must hold the credential for the direction you need.
3. Translate and double-check
Verify passport-matching name spelling, document numbers, Buddhist-to-Gregorian date conversion and consistent renderings of Thai agency names across the whole set.
4. Apply the NAATI stamp and certification
Each translated page must carry the stamp, practitioner number, credential expiry, signature and date.
5. Add legalisation if the destination requires it
Some uses — registering a marriage in Australia, or presenting Thai documents to a third body — additionally require MFA legalisation.
6. Deliver soft copy and hard copy
Most Australian bodies accept a PDF scanned from the stamped original, though some request the hard copy by post.
Typical timing
Typically 1–3 business days per set · same-day handling depends on page volume · add 3–5 business days if MFA legalisation follows
Common pitfalls
- NAATI credentials expire. A translation stamped after the practitioner's expiry date will be rejected.
- Never self-translate, however strong your English: Australian authorities treat the applicant as an interested party.
- Buddhist-era dates must be converted correctly; a one-year discrepancy is enough to have the file returned.
- Every document must spell your name exactly as in your passport. If the spelling differs, attach the name-change certificate or a transliteration note.
- Torn, corrected or copy-of-a-copy originals are commonly rejected at the legalisation stage — request a freshly issued copy from the issuing authority first.
- Some documents carry a validity window (often 3–6 months from issue) set by the receiving authority. Check it before starting the chain.
Practical tips
- Always send the passport copy along with the batch so the name spelling is consistent from the start.
- Scan every original to a 300 dpi colour PDF before sending it out, in case you must refile or the destination asks for a soft copy.
- Always prepare two sets — one to submit, one to keep. Many authorities retain the submitted originals.
- If the documents will be used in more than one country, say so up front: the number of sets and the attestation format differ by destination.
- Leave at least two weeks' buffer before your real deadline: Thai public holidays and embassy holidays do not coincide.

Comparison: NAATI translation vs general certified translation
| Aspect | NAATI-certified translation | General certified translation |
|---|---|---|
| Who accredits the translator | NAATI, Australia's national accreditation authority | A translation agency or a domestic professional body |
| Where it is accepted | Australian bodies such as Home Affairs, universities and state road authorities | Thai authorities and countries that do not specify a NAATI standard |
| Certification mark | A NAATI stamp with the practitioner number and certification expiry | A translator's or agency's certificate of accuracy |
| Extra certification | Usually needs no legalisation when used inside Australia | Commonly needs notarial certification and legalisation for overseas use |
| Rejection risk | Low where the receiving body explicitly requires NAATI | High where the receiving body specifically requires NAATI |
More than a processing agency — an advisor through the whole process
Our team has worked on cross-border documentation for more than 15 years. You get more than a completed errand: we map the correct order of steps from the start, flag the items receiving authorities most often send back, and explain the fastest route that fits your specific case.
- Case assessment before we start — which documents are genuinely required and which are not, so nothing is done twice.
- A dedicated advisor for your case, so you never have to re-explain your situation.
- Step-by-step progress updates and a digital copy of every page at completion for future reference.
- Continued guidance after delivery — when documents need renewing and what the next step in the same matter looks like.
Note: we provide document preparation, translation and certification services. Approval decisions always rest with the receiving authority.
Prefer not to handle this yourself?
We handle the whole chain — document review, translation, certification by a Notarial Services Attorney, MFA legalisation and the destination embassy. Send one set and receive the finished file with a digital copy of every page.
