The sequence is: obtain the affirmation of freedom to marry from the partner's embassy, translate it into Thai, legalise at the MFA, then register at the district office. To use the marriage abroad afterwards, the Thai certificate must be translated into the destination language and legalised again. Allow one to three weeks overall.

Step-by-step process
1. Obtain the affirmation from the embassy
Each embassy has its own form and process; many require an appointment and an oath by the applicant.
2. Translate the foreign documents into Thai
The translation must mirror the original line by line, including the embassy's seal text.
3. Legalise at the Department of Consular Affairs
The MFA authenticates the embassy officer's signature and the translation before a registrar will accept the file.
4. Register at the district office
Both parties and the witnesses attend together; the registrar may interview them to confirm consent.
5. Obtain certified extracts of the marriage record
Request the Kor Ror 2 and Kor Ror 3 forms, or the marriage certification the destination specifies.
6. Translate and legalise for overseas use
Translate the Thai marriage record into the destination language, then legalise and attest as required.

Common pitfalls
- Affirmations of freedom to marry usually expire within three to six months; once lapsed the whole step repeats.
- A divorce granted abroad must be recognised before it can be recorded in the Thai family registry.
- Every document must spell your name exactly as in your passport. If the spelling differs, attach the name-change certificate or a transliteration note.
- Torn, corrected or copy-of-a-copy originals are commonly rejected at the legalisation stage — request a freshly issued copy from the issuing authority first.
- Some documents carry a validity window (often 3–6 months from issue) set by the receiving authority. Check it before starting the chain.
- The order cannot be swapped: translate → certify → legalise → embassy. Skipping a step means restarting the whole chain.
Practical tips
- Scan every original to a 300 dpi colour PDF before sending it out, in case you must refile or the destination asks for a soft copy.
- Always prepare two sets — one to submit, one to keep. Many authorities retain the submitted originals.
- If the documents will be used in more than one country, say so up front: the number of sets and the attestation format differ by destination.
- Leave at least two weeks' buffer before your real deadline: Thai public holidays and embassy holidays do not coincide.
- Keep every receipt and acknowledgement slip — they are what lets you trace the file or request a replacement if it is lost.
